The January 2008 edition of the UK400Club/BBA List of Birds of the Western Palearctic has just been published and contains a number of changes and additions as follows…
Desertas Petrel - this is the new name given to Fea’s Soft-plumaged Petrel
Cape Verde Storm Petrel Oceanodroma jabejabe - considered separate species to Madeiran Petrel
Intermediate Egret becomes Yellow-billed Egret
Little, Sabine’s, Black-headed, Brown-headed and Grey-headed Gull scientific name change
Long-billed Crested Lark Galerida macrorhyncha - considered separate species to Crested Lark (includes randonii)
Varied Thrush - scientific name chang
Gran Canaria Blue Tit - new taxon
Willow Tit - scientific name change
North African Blue-eared Magpie - new taxon
Pale Rockfinch - name change (previously Pale Rock Sparrow
Egyptian Nile Swallow - new taxon
North American Barn Swallow - new taxon
Egyptian Yellow Wagtail - new taxon
Scrub Warblers - two species now recognise
Madeiran Chafffinch - considered separate from North African Chaffinch

The UK400 Club UK and Ireland - Combined Life List Totals - As at 31st JANUARY 2008
This delightful White-crowned Sparrow in Cley village (Norfolk) from 3rd January until at least 31st January 2008 represented a new bird for over 3,000 British birders, including those listed below in the UK400 Club Life List rankings

The following Ruddy Shelducks are ACCEPTED for 2007 -:
Portland Bill (Dorset) 3 flew North on 27th July
Keyhaven Harbour (Hants) 31st July & 19th August; also at Christchurch Harbour (Dorset) on 1st August and Selsey/Bracklesham (West Sussex) from 4th-10th August
Minsmere RSPB (Suffolk), 6 juveniles, 10th August, same, Paxton Pits NR (Cambs) 11th August and at Kinsham Pit/Bredon’s Hardwick (Worcs) from 12th-17th August.
Southwold (Suffolk), 11 flew North, 16th August
Holland Haven then Tollesbury Creek (Essex), 3 juveniles, 18th August, same, Wickham Market (Suffolk) on 27th August and at Salthouse (Norfolk) on 2nd September.
Baston’Langtoft Pits (Lincs), eight, 7th October

Croxden Quarry (Staffs), pair, 20th-24th May, presumed same, Thrapston GP (Northants) 19th June, Summerleys NR (Northants) 23rd June, Methley Quarry (West Yorks) 15th July and Wernffrwd (Gower)/Gwendraeth Estuary (Carmarthen) 16th July-5th August.
Weston Sewage Works (Somerset) 21st May, presumed same, Steart/Axe Estuary, 30th July to 4th August.
