Ageing and Sexing Bohemian Waxwings
The Bohemian Waxwing is one of the most popular and charming species of bird that occurs in Britain and is a typical bird of the boreal forests of Scandinavia. It is a regular breeder in northern and central Finland and Sweden but the bulk of the population is in the vast taiga forests of northern Russia and Siberia.
It has a preference for Spruce and Pine trees in summer, where it remains inconspicuous in pairs, but in winter gathers in large flocks, where its winter diet consists of predominantly berries.
In years of crop failure, large-scale irruptions may occur, and the populations move westwards and southwards, often transiting northern Europe rapidly as food dries up.
